Plano, TX, July11, 2017 – Women who are seeking to lower their personal risk for certain female-specific forms of cancer may want to look at their scales to guide them in the process. A recent study found that obese women who undergo bariatric surgical procedures to help them address weight can dramatically cut their risks for ovarian, breast and endometrial cancers, among others.

“Numerous studies in the past have found that bariatric surgery can cut overall cancer risks for men and women alike, but the new findings point to an added benefit for women,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “As research has shown, bariatric surgery that helps patients effectively shed pounds can have tremendously positive impacts on health.”

The study that found risk-reduction benefits for female cancers involved a group of more than 1,400 obese women. All of the women in the study group had undergone bariatric surgery to address weight-related concerns. These women were matched with a control group that underwent non-surgical treatments to help them address obesity. After a median follow up of about 18.1 years, researchers found the risk for all cancers dropped by about 29 percent in the surgical group. Women in the surgical group were also about 32 percent less likely to have developed female-specific cancers, researchers found.

The study adds to the ever-growing body of evidence that shows bariatric surgical procures, such as the gastric bypass, can have very positive impacts on health. From helping people address symptoms related to type 2 diabetes to lowering risks for cancer, heart disease and other life-limiting illnesses, surgical intervention can provide the assistance people need to lose weight and keep it off while improving health status.

“Obesity puts people at serious risk for many health-related concerns,” says Dr. Nicholson. “By taking action to address weight, people can reduce those risks while improving their overall health status in the process. Bariatric surgery provides a viable way for people who have been unable to lose weight using diet and exercise alone to address this concern more successfully.”
