Abortion and Morality

In this press release, the notion of abortion and morality is being observed

For several decades, abortion has been one of the most controversial issues among the academics and philosophers. The main problem consists in the opposition of such notions as personal freedom and reproductive freedom, the value of human life and the right to control one’s body. While the legally free abortion seems to be the manifestation of gender equality, it contradicts the basic concept of the life value and is psychologically and politically destructive.
Before being acquainted with the anti-abortion literature, the personal judgment can reflect the pro-choice position. The common sense suggests that the childbirth is a life-changing experience and requires a certain degree of preparation and moral commitment. Certainly, women have the justified right to consider the consequences of childbirth in terms of possible health issues. Moreover, the medical progress makes the procedure of abortion painless for the fetus. In that case, one may consider the abortion as a rationally expectable option.
Unfortunately, this assertion does not take into account that the life of fetus is equally valuable. During the lifetime struggle for the independence and social equality, the pro-choice feminists vigorously claim the exclusive right to control their body. However, numerous philosophical arguments may undermine this conviction. The first challenging dilemma is whether the life of the fetus is less important than the life of a woman. No dependent and powerless human being deserves ill-treatment and indifference. The universal concept of kindness and protection seems to contradict the self-serving claims of the pro-choice feminists simply because the helpless unborn child has the same rights for love and protection. Similarly, as the adult women seek to protect the right for making the independent choices it is unfair to end the life of a fetus without its consent. The obvious conflict of interests makes it necessary to examine the basic notion of personhood. From the legal point of view, it is a set of features such as “self-consciousness, rational decision-making and social participation” that allows the human being to demand respect and social equality. While the social norms recognize the value of freedom and equality they fail to consider the value of life itself. The expert accurately emphasizes the necessity to incorporate the fundamental notion of human life value as a basic attribute of the just society.
The same conviction may expose the common assertion about the painless procedure of abortion. It is highly disputable whether the absence of the mentioned qualities justifies the fetus killing. The widely recognized standards of personhood are rather high and cannot apply to people even in the early childhood. Conversely, the pro-life feminists argue that the immature and socially unconscious stage of development is equally important part of the growth process of any living organism. Consequently, it seems unfair to treat the fetus differently. Moreover, fetus killing negates the fundamental meaning of the maternal thinking. It contradicts the very nature of maternal love that should embrace the possibility of parenthood unconditionally and despite the possible penalties of unexpected pregnancy. The widely recognized right for abortion became so ingrained in the minds of pro-choice feminists that the moral dilemma of the problem is rarely addressed. The evidence shows that one may easily disprove the feministic convictions since they contradict the universal principles of humanity.
In addition, the promotion of permissible abortion has the psychologically and politically destructive effect on the female population. The psychological effects of the legally free abortion may be aggravating. Since it is highly available, the issue of possible pregnancy loses its moral appeal. The institutionalization of abortion leads to perceiving the women as physically and emotionally incapable to cope with the unexpected pregnancy. One considers the unwanted childbirth as burden that does not allow women to adapt in the male-dominated world. Hence it follows that the abortion becomes the necessity and the means of personal liberation from the social constraints. The underlying problem is the strong association of the legal right for abortion with the social equality and personal reproduction. Conversely, the pro-life feminists explicitly argue about the equally secured access to social benefits in case of childbirth. Mothers may certainly expect and demand the fathers’ full participation in the process of upbringing and financial support of the newborns. Similarly, the larger community is obliged to provide the system of day care and child support. The pro-choice feminists that prefer to consider the childbirth their individual responsibility seem to be hypocritical since they deny their sexual partners’ right to participate in decision-making and exclude the society from sharing the responsibility for meeting the demands of young generation. The mentioned arguments clearly illustrate that the pursuance of individual freedom through the fetus killing is morally wrong since it opposes the main goal of the feminist movement, i.e. the achievement of social equality and women empowerment.
The issue of abortion appears to be a highly debatable subject. The arguments of the pro-choice feminists are based on the purely self-serving convictions and rationally calculated consequences of childbirth. However, the basic notions of morality greatly diminish their credibility. The permissible abortion contradicts the fundamental concept of human life value and negates the political and social accomplishments of the feminist movement.
