Including a dog in the family might be a good idea for animal lovers courtesy of the many positive after-effects associated with the idea and that is why people often mull over the idea of acquiring a puppy. But with ownership comes responsibility and looking after a puppy is akin to rearing a baby or a sapling – it requires all the love and care in the world. One of the important aspects in this regard pertains to feeding puppies because the nature of the diet can make all the difference to the animal’s behavior and health. Indeed, dog allergies are not just existent but have been found to be on the rise over the last few years. Something that is even more alarming is the fact that in most cases the underlying causes have been traced back to feeding puppies the wrong kind of food. A bigger problem is realization on part of the owner that his pooch is truly miserable because all communication from the latter is expressed in a couple of woofs.

Some of the food groups which have been known to cause dog allergies are meats, dairy products and certain grains. Difficult to believe though it might be given the animal’s reputation as a carnivore, there are dogs who might be allergic to either one or different types of meat. One way of going about it would entail feeding puppies only one type of meat for any given meal and observing him for symptoms.

Contrary to the popular opinion, often dogs and cats refrain from lapping up milk or feasting with milk products simply because this food group does not agree with their system. Allergy to milk is due to one of its components named lactose which is why it is termed as lactose intolerance. Feeding puppies with milk is something that most dog owners indulge in but this practice is not recommended by vets because it could trigger an entire chain of reactions which could adversely affect its health. Dog allergies arising from lactose intolerance are manifested through a range of gastric disorders.

Grains like corn, gluten and wheat have also been known to cause dog allergies and these are truly torturous for the pets because they are main fiber-providing ingredients in all types of pet foods. In fact many of the animal dieticians recommend feeding puppies with a high fiber diet as these cause roughage and hence result in regular bowel movements. However, in case the animal is allergic to a particular variety of grain it is likely to suffer a lot in form of vomiting, hair loss and incessant itching. To overcome this problem, the owner must check the labeling of the food package thoroughly.

The good news is that not all dogs are prone to allergies and a better way of looking at the situation would be treat each dog as a unique individual having a system which is distinct from others. There are different ways in which dog allergies can be handled and it is up to the owner to think creatively in this respect. At other times it is just a question of building the dog’s emotional security because a happy dog is often one which is a joy and a pleasure to be with all along.
