Dr. Gilberto Jimenez explains how prostate seed implants work and their benefits

Lewisville, TX – Treatment for prostate cancer has for a long time been invasive. Like other cancers it required a lot of internal examination yet the organ in question may easily seem overwhelmed by all of it. A lot of research over the years has brought about a new treatment method that is less invasive. This method is what is known as prostate seed implants.

“Prostate seed implants in the form of small radioactive pellets are placed inside the tumor. These work over time by breaking down. In so doing, they release small appropriate doses of radiation to the target site,” explained Dr. Gilberto Jimenez. “This whole process can take place within weeks or even months. Everything happens naturally at its pace.”

Prostate seed implants hold several benefits for patients including:

• The biggest advantage that patients will notice and appreciate is the fact that it is minimally invasive. Patients will not have large scars to contend with or even be afraid of going through a major procedure. Everything is simple and straightforward.

• Disintegration of the pellets may take weeks but the insertion takes less than an hour. One can go back home the same day the procedure is done and go back to their regular activities within a few days. It does not interfere with life as the patient knows it. This makes it very appealing to many.

• These implants are very effective, especially with cancer that is in its early stages. It has been found to be as effective as surgery in such situations. This happens with minimal side effects. No residual radioactive substance remains in the prostate when the procedure is complete.

“Prostate seed implants area good option for early stage cancer and can be used alone if the patient is low risk,” adds Dr. Jimenez.“Where the patient is high risk or advanced in stage, an oncologist may recommend other interventions such as external beam radiation therapy and chemotherapy. All methods should assure the patient of successful treatment.”
