Homeowner: Do You Know Where Your Keys Have Been?

Posted August 27, 2016 by levisa987

The movers have gone, your real estate agent left a lovely welcome basket and the cable guy will supposedly be arriving after 1:00 but before 5:00.

Have you considered that when that real estate agent handed over the keys, the only thing new about those keys was the new hands they were in?

If your home is still secured with the original locks, have you considered how many people have a copy? Even if you are the first occupant, there is still a chance your keys were in the hands of contractors or multiple sub-contractors. Whether acquired legitimately or not, the point is you don't know where your keys have been or how many have been reproduced.

Changing the locks can be a practical, proactive measure when you move into a new home or apartment. There are multiple ways of doing this.

The quickest, least expensive method is to have the existing locks re-keyed. A locksmith can determine whether the existing locks can be re-keyed or not. Not only is it cost effective, the locksmith can re-key your entire house so that you only have to use one key for accessing multiple locks.

If your locks cannot be re-keyed, then the least expensive method is to have all locks replaced. It is the least expensive method when you consider new options in home security such as keyless entry locks.

Keyless entry locks can be a more secure because they are harder to tamper with than regular key locks. Battery-powered, programmable keypads are the most economical of the keyless entry locks. Easy installation, the convenience of not having to carry a key and easy access for guests make them the preferred choice among homeowners. The ability to change access codes for one day ensures added security when allowing access to cable installers or other service personnel. Higher-priced, keyless entry locks include credit card or fingerprint readers or deadbolts that can be locked or unlocked using a cell phone.

Computer passwords should never be shared changed often and should be kept away from easily accessible locations. A missing or stolen credit card should be reported immediately. Standard hotel management check-in procedures prohibit personnel from mentioning your room number out loud. Security measures such as these keep us, our possessions and our loved ones safe.
