Researchers at the Northwestern University have developed a wide band tunable burning laser , which can be used at the detection of drugs and explosives.


This solid state quantum cascade laser (QCL) can be tuned quickly, and is emitted in the wavelength range of the critical "fingerprint" In the experiment, the laser has demonstrated its ability to capture the unique spectral fingerprint of the gas.This laser can be adjusted by using a single transmitting aperture in the 2~9.1um, and the 8 laser sampled grating distributed the beam combination on the chip.

"The only moving part of the whole system is used to ensure the cooling of the Green Laser ," said Razeghi Manijeh, director of the laboratory of the Mccormick School of engineering at the Northwestern University. "Compared with the existing systems that require mechanical components to achieve tuning, this system has a huge advantage. We hope that this system can be very stable."

At first, the results of patent applications are published in the June 8th edition of the scientific report.
