Understanding the Primary Cancer Treatment Options

Dr. Gregory Echt explains the primary cancer treatment for patients.

Irving, Texas, Aug 26, 2019 – Cancer is caused by an outgrowing of cells in the body. These cells can spread to surrounding areas, thus posing a significant challenge to the patient that can require immediate attention. Many patients fail to differentiate a cancerous tumor from healthy tissues, which leads to cancer cells becoming invasive.

"Cancer is a genetic disease that arises from different genes that control how our cells grow and function. The disease has similar symptoms like those of common diseases, which makes it difficult to diagnose," explains Dr. Echt. "Late diagnosis will mean that most patients do not receive treatment in time, which may lead to various complications."

Here are the primary cancer treatment options:

Chemotherapy –This involves the use of medication to treat patients. The treatment is administered on its own or with other medicines depending on the condition. Chemotherapy kills both cancer and healthy cells and forms new cells. These cells include those in the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, hair follicles and the reproductive system. One benefit of chemotherapy is that it treats the whole body. Healthy cells also recover very quickly after chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy – Treats cancer using particle beams. The cancer cells get damaged since the genetic material hosting their growth is destroyed. The treatment aims at destroying minimum healthy cells. The available types of radiotherapy include:

• External beam radiation therapy – It uses x-ray beams that come from outside the body. It is the most familiar type of radiation therapy.
• Internal radiation therapy – are also known as brachytherapy. Small radiation pellets inside the body release radiation to the affected cells hence killing them.
• Intraoperative radiations - It involves the use of radiational beams in doing cancer surgeries.
• Systemic radiation –Involves injection of a radioactive substance to the veins. The element delivers radiation throughout the body, thus killing cancer cells.

Alternative cancer therapies – This is the use of therapies that are not part of standard medical practices. The treatments depend on background training and personal biases of both the patient and the caregiver. Studies indicate that 50% of cancer patients undergo this therapy, and many physicians are always willing to discuss it with patients. A well-tailored treatment is given depending on your signs and symptoms.

"As a patient, you are required to choose the right type of treatment you wish to undergo. We will advise you on the available treatment and the best for your cancer level," says Dr. Echt. “It is vital to seek the right treatment; this will help you manage the disease easily.”
