Irving, Texas – July 23, 2019 – Breast augmentation or enhancement is a procedure that takes two hours under anesthesia. During the process, different types of implants are used, including silicone gel or saline according to the preferences of the patient. The surgeon can insert the implant behind the breast muscle or under the breast tissue. The process has complications that can make the patient feel uncomfortable.

"After placing the implants, the surgeon will stitch the incision sites to close them, and even use drainage tubes," explained Dr. Kancharla. “Ensure that you follow the care instructions provided by the surgeon for the incision site.”

The complications of breast augmentation include:

• Implant deflation or rupture – Implant ruptures can occur 10 to 15 years after implantation. Deflation of a saline implant is easy to detect because of the rapid decrease in the size of the breast on the affected side. But ruptures of silicone gel implants are hard to detect. In case a rupture is detected, the faulty implant is removed and sent back to the manufacturer for investigation. A rupture can occur during the implantation procedure or years after the implant.

• Capsular contracture–Capsular contracture can occur because of the body's immune response to foreign bodies which allows collagen fibers to form and weave around the implanted prosthetic device. The collagen fibers will start tightening and hardening, and this will compress the implant and cause breast deformity and pain. It is also believed that capsular contracture may be due to subclinical bacterial infection. This complication can be treated surgically through a capsulotomy or capsulectomy.

• Wrinkling or folding of the implant – A wrinkled implant is often visible because it alters the aesthetic appearance of the enhanced breast. In other cases, it can be detected by palpation. Insufficient breast tissue in the lower outer pole or thin skin, subglandular placement of the implant and use of textured surface or saline filled implants are the main causes of wrinkling.

“You should consult your doctor immediately you experience fever, abnormal discharge from the incision site, rupture of the stitches and any firmness or enlargement of one or both breast due to pressure and pain,” cautioned Dr. Kancharla. “
