Understanding Prosthetics asan Alternative to Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Kiran Kancharla explains the various types of breast prostheses for women who prefer them instead of breast reconstruction.

Irving, Texas – May 21, 2019 – A prosthesis is a preference for women who have had a mastectomy but do not want to undergo breast reconstruction. Since they still want a breast shape to look balanced, a prosthesis is a quick way to fill the space left after a mastectomy. One can slip a prosthesis into a bra and get the normal breast shape.

"There are many shapes, materials, and sizes of breast prostheses including fiberfill interior and silicone gel and more," said Dr. Kiran Kancharla. “They can also come with adhesive patches to be attached on the upper breast edge or with magnets that help them stay in place. If a patient has sensitive skin after their surgery, they need to seek advice from their doctor about use.”

The two types of prostheses below can be used by patients for different reasons and at different times:

• Silicone prosthesis – It is a prosthesis that looks very realistic and even feels natural for the patient who is wearing it daily. Silicone prosthesis comes in two types namely:

* Symmetrical or pear-shaped prostheses – These types of prostheses can work on either side and be worn sideways to fill out the bra’s side or be worn straight up to provide cleavage and center fullness.

* Asymmetrical – These are designed specifically for the left side or right side.

• Polyfill or foam prosthesis – This type of prosthesis is recommended for patients who are recuperating from surgery because of the comfort it gives to patients. They are lightweight and can be worn in salt or chlorinated water and be machine washed. They are also comfortable during swimming and even warm weather.

When purchasing breast prostheses, be sure they will work for your lifestyle, unique situation, clothing, body type, and activities," continued Dr. Kancharla. “You may want to go for custom-made breast prostheses that are designed to suit your body and your other breast if you only had one mastectomy.
