Treatment Side Effects for Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Dr. Gilberto Jimenez explains the various side effects caused by triple negative breast cancer treatment.

Irving, TX, Mar 23, 2019 – Triple-negative breast cancer is more aggressive than any other form of breast cancer. This type of cancer proliferates and spreads very fast to other parts of the body. Triple-negative tumors test negative for progesterone receptors, estrogen receptors, and HER2 genes. The risk of recurrence of triple negative cancer is very high, but the disease is treatable.

"About 15-25% of diagnosed breast cancers are triple negative," explained Dr. Jimenez. "And without the receptors for HER2, estrogen, and progesterone, triple negative breast cancer does not respond to targeted therapies like Herceptin and tamoxifen which are effective on other forms of breast cancer. However, it can be treated effectively with chemotherapy.”

Here are the common side effects caused by treatment for triple negative breast cancer:

• Loss of Hair – Patients may experience loss of part or all their hair within two to four weeks of their chemotherapy treatment. The hair will start growing back a month and a half after the last chemotherapy. New hair loss treatments are available for patients who are concerned about their hair.

• Tiredness – A patient will feel tired after undergoing radiation therapy and chemotherapy. This feeling may go away a few weeks later after completing the therapies.

• Nausea – Each chemotherapy treatment causes sickness and exhaustion in the patient. This differs from patient to patient. The doctor can prescribe medicine for nausea if the patient feels queasy.

• Skin Changes – Sometimes the patient will experience redness or peeling of the skin which looks like a sunburn. Such conditions can be treated, and the doctor can advise the patient on how to go about it.

“Dealing with the side effects of treatments for triple negative breast cancer is not easy,” continued Dr. Jimenez. "Patients should consult with their physicians to understand their treatment plan and prepare to deal with its side effects."
