The Treatment Options for Breast Cancer

Dr. James Mackey explains the various treatment options available for breast cancer.

Irving, TX – The behavior and biology of breast cancer affects every treatment plan. Some tumors are small and aggressive, while others are large but slow growing. The treatment type for breast cancer is usually personalized, and it significantly depends on the tumor's subtype. The subtype includes the HER2 status and hormone receptor status (PR, ER), the tumor’s stage, the genomic markers, the presence of genetic mutations and the age, general health and preference of the patient.

“Your cancer care plan should also include the treatment for the symptoms and side effects,” said Dr. Mackey. “Take enough time to learn about all your options and clarify all the things that you don’t understand. Talk to your doctor about the goals of each treatment and what to expect during your treatment."

The treatments for breast cancer are varied. When making your treatment plan decisions, it is recommended that you also consider clinical trials as a choice. Here are some of the recommended treatment options for breast cancer:

• Surgery – It is the surgical removal of a breast tumor and some of the surrounding healthy tissues. Surgery can also be performed to examine the nearby axillary lymph nodes under the arm. It includes lumpectomy where the tumor is removed together with some healthy tissue surrounding it. Most of the breast is left intact which later undergoes radiation therapy. Mastectomy is where the entire breast is removed.

• Radiation therapy – Radiation therapy involves using high energy x-rays to destroy the cancer cells and lower the risk of cancer recurring in the breast. It includes external beam radiation therapy, which is administered from a machine outside the body, or brachytherapy where radioactive sources are placed directly into the tumor. Adjuvant radiation therapy is administered after the surgery while neoadjuvant radiation, which shrinks a large tumor to make it removable, is given before the surgery.

• Chemotherapy – It involves the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells and their ability to grow and multiply. Chemotherapy can be intravenously administered or taken orally by swallowing.

“After successful treatment of breast cancer, a patient should seek further tests to ensure that the cancer does not recur,” continued Dr. Mackey. “Some patients may need to discuss after-surgery options such as reconstructive surgery and more with their doctor.”
