Dr. Kiran Kancharla talks about appropriate care for patients undergoing cancer treatment

Irving, TX – Cancer always takes a toll on a patient’s body. The requisite treatment, while providing relief for the cancer, tends to weaken the body. Patients will experience side effects such as fatigue and pain and this can cause extreme discomfort for patients. It is therefore important for patients to get extra care and generally handle themselves better during cancer therapy. This care comes in the form of everyday practices with tweaks appropriate for the patient.

“The immune system is weak a few days after radiation therapy and the body also feels an impact,” Dr. Kiran Kancharla, Medical Oncologist says. “It is important that a patient adjust their daily routine to accommodate their new state.”

Modifications that a patient should make include:

• Rest –Radiation therapy leaves the body feeling lethargic. Getting enough sleep at night is crucial. Short naps during the day help to increase rest time, which in turn helps the patient feel energized. A little activity also helps to sleep better later on. Anything that can help the patient relax is also useful and this can include listening to music or some light reading.

• Balanced diet – Radiation causes some damage to body cells. A proper diet helps to repair these cells. A balanced diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as plant-based protein. The doctor can help with meal suggestions to ensure the patient gets the nutrients they need.

• Better skin care – The skin becomes very sensitive after radiation therapy. Patients may have to avoid excess heat or cold even in the form of ice packs and heating pads. Perfumes, lotions, deodorants, and harsh soaps may cause irritation and the patient may need to use a mild soap. Sunscreen is also essential for protection from the sun. If possible, patients would do well to avoid the sun altogether.

“In addition to the physical adjustments a patient makes, it is important for them to have emotional support,” Dr. Kancharla adds. “Emotional support comes in handy when the patient is feeling anxious, scared, or depressed during treatment.”
