Dr. Gilberto Jimenez explains the symptoms and risk factors associated with colorectal cancer

Irving, TX – Colorectal cancer impacts thousands of women and men each year. It is the third most diagnosed cancer among men and women in the U.S. This form of cancer begins with small benign adenomatous polyps which grow over time into cancer.

“The polyps themselves or even the early stages of colon cancer produce few symptoms, if any. It is vital for you to see your doctor if you experience gas, cramping, abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements and blood in stool," said Dr. Jimenez.“We recommend that patients undergo regular screening tests to help prevent colon cancer by identifying and eliminating the polyps before they develop into cancer.”

Some of the risk factors for developing colorectal cancer are:

Inherited syndromes – The most common inherited syndromes associated with colorectal cancer include hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Other syndromes may include Lynch Syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome, and Turcot Syndrome.

Age– Colorectal cancer can occur at any age, but the chances of developing the disease increase from 45 years. Nearly 95% of colorectal cancers occur in patients who are 45 years and above.

Diet: Diets high in red and processed meats can increase your risks of colorectal cancer. Fried, grilled, or broiled meats or cooking meats at extremely high temperatures creates chemicals that increase the risk. A diet full of vegetables, fruits, and high fiber grains is recommended for reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Smoking and alcohol consumption – When smoking, one swallows cancer-causing substances which increase the risk. Heavy alcohol intake also increases the risk of colorectal cancer.

“Most of the risks associated with colorectal cancer are lifestyle-related factors. These factors include diet, weight, exercise, smoking, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption,” added Dr. Jimenez. “All these risks can be changed by simply altering your lifestyle choices, which in turn will reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer.”
