Alternative Cancer Treatments

Dr. Gilberto Jimenez explains the various types of alternative cancer treatments that aid primary therapies to help reduce symptoms and side effects of cancer.

Irving, TX, Nov 23, 2018 – Alternative cancer treatments work alongside primary and adjuvant therapies to help minimize the symptoms and manage some side effects associated with cancer such as sleep disorders, vomiting, stress and nausea. Alternative treatments are not meant to replace the primary cancer care offered by the doctors, but they can provide relief during treatment and positively change your physical and emotional well-being.

“Whether considering one means of alternative cancer treatment or wanting to combine several, you can find the right formula that will help to manage your symptoms,” said Dr. Jimenez. “But first you have to talk to your cancer care team to help you determine the appropriate balance between the two treatments.”

Some of the alternative cancer treatments include:

• Relaxation techniques – Relaxation techniques help you to focus your attention on relaxing your muscles and calming your mind. They might consist of activities such as progressive muscle relaxation or visualization exercises. These techniques help to relieve fatigue besides helping cancer patients sleep better. Relaxation techniques are quite safe, and a therapist will always be there to lead you through the exercises until you can do them by yourself.

• Acupuncture – Acupuncture treatment is when a practitioner inserts tiny needles into your skin at targeted points. This treatment helps to relieve the nausea caused by chemotherapy and also cancer pain. Acupuncture is safe as long as the patient is guided by a licensed practitioner who uses sterile needles. Avoid this if you have low blood counts or are taking blood thinning medications.

• Exercise – Integrate exercise into your daily routine to help reduce stress, manage weight, lower blood pressure and improve your heart health. Moderate exercises like swimming and walking can help cancer patients reduce their symptoms and maintain their energy. Yoga and Tai Chi exercises can help. Studies show that exercise programs can help cancer patients live longer and improve their overall quality of life.

“Alternative cancer treatments are beneficial to patients during and after treatment because they help in restoring health and extending life,” continued Dr. Jimenez. “However, a doctor’s approval is essential to avoid any complications that may arise if they don’t work.”
