The Importance of Sea Turtle-Friendly Lighting

Sea turtles are already endangered and laws and agencies have been formed for their protection. One factor which influences sea turtle survival is outdoor lighting. Read about the importance of sea turtle-friendly lighting here.

Sea turtles have been inhabitants of our seas for approximately 110 million years. They inhabit waters in warm and temperate areas, which make them a common sight in Florida coasts. During the breeding season, female sea turtles return to shore to nest, the same grounds where they were born. They return to the water after laying their eggs, and the young are left to hatch. Hatchlings would then emerge from the sand by digging themselves out and crawl towards the sea, where they develop into fully grown adults.

Sadly, sea turtles are now classified as endangered because of years spent killing them for their meat, eggs, and shells, and getting caught in fishing nets.

The United States Endangered Species Act of 1973 does not allow activities that harm sea turtles and their eggs. In Florida, there are statutes as well as government agencies and organizations formed to protect sea turtle life. These laws are imperative to ensure that the already dwindling population of sea turtles will no longer endure a drastic decrease, as well as conserve and rehabilitate this imperiled species.

Nesting plays a very important role in increasing the sea turtle population, as more eggs laid and more successful hatchings result to a high probability of survival. Among the many problems that sea turtle hatchlings face are predation, pollution, boat traffic, and coastal lighting.

Light pollution is a very serious problem for hatchlings. Instinctively, they avoid unlighted places and travel towards the brightest source of light, i.e the horizon, the moon light reflection on the water.

Because of modern lighting installations, sea turtle hatchlings may get confused and travel towards these sources of light, resulting in death by predation, dehydration, or even getting hit by vehicles.

Florida beaches are giant breeding grounds for sea turtles. If you live near coastal areas or areas where sea turtles are known to nest, it is vital that if ever you decide to install landscape lighting, you must conform with environmental statutes regarding the protection of wildlife. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek products which would not only light your home but protect our precious sea turtles as well.
