The Federal Council of Swiss has chosen to increase the quotas of work permit for 2019.
Consequences on Other Work Permits
The quotas are inflicted on a national, preferably than per-company, basis, on long-term B grants and short-term L grants. B grants are applicable for a tenure Up to five years and are renewable.
Once the B grant quotas are achieved, candidates are given with L permits preferably – valid for a tenure up to 12 months and changeable into a B permit following two years.
Nationals of Non-EU/EFTA
In the year 2019, a sum of 8500 professionals may be hired from non-EU/EFTA states, an improvement of 500
The number of B grants accessible will increase from 1000 to 4500
The number of L grants possible will decline by 500 to 4000
The 1000 additional B permits will be allotted to the federal quota, rather than straight to the cantons, to allow the federal government to flexibly handle the further need in the various townships on demand

Nationals of EU/EFTA
For the year 2018, the authorities will allow 500 long-term B grants - no variation on previous year’s quota
The authorities will also support 3000 short-term L grants – no modification on previous year’s quota
These quotas will be allotted to the cantons on a quarterly basis, as earlier
