A fire damper is a device used to restrict the flow of flames through the duct work of an air system. A fire damper closes automatically in the event of a fire to save the space from the spread of fire. UL 555 is the test standard used for classifying fire dampers; UL 555S is the test standard for classifying smoke dampers. A combination of fire/smoke dampers must be efficient to meet the test requirements for both the UL test standards. Based on these tests, the dampers are then given a leakage rating, fire rating or both for combination dampers and these are installed in the duct system.
UL 555 standard classified fire dampers can be used in both static and dynamic HVAC systems. They are a perfect choice in new and renovated construction sites. To ensure proper selection of fire dampers, manufacturers are expected to incorporate the UL-555 specifications to ensure the system conformity.
