Mr. Putty's Fun Park's Mini Golf Courses Develop Cognitive Control and Qualitative Reasoning

The golf industry recently recognized the aggressive cognitive strategies of professional players. As a major technique in mini-golf, strategic putting techniques encourage cognitive and qualitative reasoning among young players and novices.

[TEGA CAY, 11/22,2017] - Now, more than ever, the golf industry sees the mental aspect of the game. According to Dr. Bhrett McCabe, a renowned sports and performance psychologist who works with PGA players, recent golf tours currently witnessed cognitive expansion. He describes this phenomenon as a more aggressive mind game that frequently occurs in younger players. These players break the fishbowl mentality and focus on the course instead of the hole.

Thinking Aloud and Self-Analysis

A common sports psychology terminology encourages players, specifically golfers, to “Think Aloud.” The method allows players to verbalize their thoughts to free themselves of distraction. After 20 seconds of silence, players will be asked to talk to themselves again.

The study explained that these verbalizations help understand the decisions golfers make during a round. Cognitive skills come in when golfers “read the green” or study the course and create their strategy around their findings.

A Golfer’s Steady Gaze

The golfers also use another technique called the “Quiet Eye” wherein players direct their gaze at an important point. According to a cognitive psychologist, the “Quiet Eye” takes place when a player’s brain plans the succeeding motor actions of the player.

Similar to the previous theory by Dr. McCabe, young players and novices make use of the “Quiet Eye” technique. They memorize the sequences of motion in the game and the related factors surrounding them such as the slope of the course and the direction of the wind.

Mini Golf – The Ultimate Mind Game

When it comes to analysis and reading the green, the above techniques hold the most importance in mini golf games. With short yet complicated courses, players are encouraged to carefully analyze the course rather than focus on the target hole.

Mr. Putty’s Fun Park offers 18 holes of accessibility-equipped mini golf or putt-putt courses that promote cognitive control and qualitative reasoning in young and amateur players. The varying slopes of the “green” encourage players to strategize and think ahead instead of using brute force.
