8th August 2012 - The game of golf has been known to trace its origins to as far back as the ancient Roman civilization, whereby historians claim that the game “paganica” (played with a bent stick and a soft ball), was the precursor of the modern day golf game. Others say that the golf originated in 15th century Scotland, and was played by the royals in those times. Whatever be the origin of the game, it is clear that golf is highly popular amongst people, and there are ardent admirers of this elegant game who would like to learn the basics of a good performance. The first and foremost step would include the choice of a good set of golf clubs.
The typical golf set comprises of 14 clubs, with each of the club consisting of a vertical shaft equipped with a grip and a club head. The shafts are made of steel, graphite or iron. The steel can be again subdivided into different categories. Shafts can be made of stepped steel or rifle steel.
Shafts made from steel are known to be more durable, less expensive and let the player have greater control over the kinds of shots that they play, owing to the fact that these shafts experience less torque (the lateral twisting movement of the club that occurs when the golf ball is hit by the player).
Other materials used in making the clubs include graphite, which is more expensive than steel shafts and experiences a lot more torque when a shot is made. The speed attained on a shot while using a graphite shaft is relatively more than what can be achieved on a steel shaft.
Also, the graphite shafts soften the intense vibration motion that that results from the swinging action of the club. It is advisable to customize the golf set, keeping in mind the height and weight of the player, as the length of the shaft affects the stance and subsequently the nature of the shots that are made by the player.
