Alzheimer’s disease, sometimes referred to as AD and also known as Senile Dementia, is a neurodegenerative disease and a type of dementia. It may be linked to a condition of hypertension, prolonged depression, head injury, shock or genetics.

It is most often found in older adults in their sixties and later. Because of this, symptoms are usually dismissed as age related. Alzheimer's disease specialists know that symptoms should not be ignored. Alzheimer's disease is the fourth leading cause of death in older adults after heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

Diagnosing a person with AD can be difficult and involves a series of physical and mental examinations. In speaking with the patient, complications may arise due to memory loss, reasoning, and linguistic problems. This is when involvement by family, close relative or caretaker can be of benefit.

The life expectancy of patients suffering from AD is short. Although the person does not die of the disease itself, issues resulting from the disease are responsible. AD occurs in various stages, the first stage being short term memory loss, language problem, and can include other insignificant symptoms which may go unnoticed. The second stage of the disease is characterized by long term memory loss, which generally isn't present during the initial stages; irritability; the loss of vocabulary to such a level that a person loses ability to properly talk or write. The third and final stage occurs when the person becomes totally dependent on others because they are unable to recognize and care for their daily needs.

Although there is no evident link between Alzheimer's disease and paralysis, in the last stages of someone suffering from AD, the person is bed ridden due to muscle mass and mobility deterioration, which can viewed as paralysis. It is interesting to note that in an experiment conducted by neurologist and paralysis specialist Dr. Lawrence Steinman, which involved infusing a molecule, ‘A-beta’, which is the main culprit in the Alzheimer's disease into the immune system of mice with symptoms resembling multiple sclerosis, that symptoms of paralysis were reversed.

Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and by anticipating the succession of symptoms, it is important to seek supportive services and establish a support network as early as possible.
