James R Hughes is a successful medical professional with over forty years’ experience in emergency medicine. He was born in Oneonta, New York and grew up in Fredonia, and Delhi in New York. Hughes worked at SUNY systems, a company his father worked at during the school holidays, doing various odd jobs. In 1971, he joined medical school and completed a nursing degree, but had to put his education on hold as he was drafted into the military. With the high scores he received during the entrance exams, he was assigned to work as a clinical specialist at the 85th Combat Support Hospital in Ft. Lee and provided medical support to special ops.

After serving in the military, James R Hughes completed medical school in Milwaukee Wisconsin and enrolled in a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin. However, he did not have time to complete his dissertation defense as he started a residency in family medicine at the Chesterfield Family Practice in Richmond, Virginia. During the residency program, James R Hughes worked in the local emergency rooms and completed most of his electives in emergency medicine. His desire to build a career in emergency medicine came after his time with the military.

For over 30 years he worked full time in emergency rooms before moving over to work at the immediate care centers in the Georgia Emergency Associates (GEA) group he co-founded. James R Hughes and five other physicians co-founded the Georgia Emergency Associates group in 1994 in Savannah. The group is committed to providing the finest emergency and immediate care in the medical field. GEA started providing emergency medical care at Candler Hospital in Savannah, and in the last 20 years has grown and now includes over 60 physicians, 45 physician extenders, and numerous other support staff. James R Hughes currently works at one of the GEA’s immediate care centers in Bluffton, South Carolina.
