Irving, TX — According to a survey conducted by the American Cancer Society, 94 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years of diagnosis. This form of cancer is deemed to have the highest mortality rate of all cancers.

“If you find it early enough, you can possibly cure it with surgery,” Dr. Gregory Echt, “It’s out there, and it’s a killer,”

To this day, it is still a challenge to discover pancreatic cancer at its earlystages. Unfortunately, it isn’t until pancreatic cancer has reached the 4th stage that it gets diagnosed. Even with the best care available, not much can be done at this point.

“This is such a violent killer, and it’s such a silent disease,” saysJill Tananbaum,Board member of Sandler-Kenner Foundation.“If we could get a grip on early detection, we could probably save an inordinate number of lives.”

As per the statistics researched by American Cancer Society, 44,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year, and about 38,000 will die.

Ongoing research continues to fully understand the growth of this cancer. The patients diagnosed with this cancer have narrow options for their treatments. Surgery is not considered as the best option because the location of the pancreas makes the surgery a risky one. Other options for treatment would be chemotherapy and radiation.

Continuous research is being conductedfor the creation of improvedvaccines and drugs, along with finding new treatment methods for pancreatic cancer. The Sandler-Kenner Foundation is one such organization that is trying to create awareness about pancreatic cancer and provides support for its research.
