Rice Mill Effluent Treatment Plant
Effluents discharged from rice mills in this district are leading to air and water pollution, a report said Tuesday.

The mills haven’t installed good quality effluent treatment plant (ETP) on their premises to treat the waste before discharge.

Some of the mills that have installed ETPs have stopped renewing them, the report said.

A case in point is the Eastern Mill along National Highway-16 under Barchana block which has been discharging toxic waste into Safei nullah without installing an ETP.

The waste not only pollutes the nullah but also flows into nearby river Genguti and pollutes it too.

The pollution of the two water bodies has affected over 10,000 residents of Rangidashpur, Gopapur, Sapanpur, Champapur, Ekadalia, Kumbharsahi, Gunisahi, Nalabeni, Haladeipur and other villages in Nelia panchayat.

The villagers and their livestock have been affected by waterborne and skin diseases.

Moreover, toxic fumes like sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, un-burnt carbon, phosphin, nitrogen oxide and methane discharged from the chimneys of these mills are polluting the atmosphere and have led to spread of respiratory ailments among the local inhabitants.

This apart, Banshidhar cold storage at Rangidaspur Square in Barchana is also contributing to pollution as the stench emanating from the waste water pollutes the atmosphere.

Residents of two villages close to the cold storage are finding it difficult to live even inside their houses with the stench filling the atmosphere.

However, the regional office of the state pollution control board has failed to act on these two units as it is not clear of its authority on the units.
