June 28, 2013 - The users of automatic watches require the Watch Winder as an additional device to keep their watches in motion when they are not worn. The inner springs of automatic watches can be kept active only by non-stop movement. When the watch is worn by the user automatically there is movement and as a result the springs get charged. However, when the watches are kept idle continuously for more than 72 hours, due to lack of movement the watches become non-functioning necessitating rewinding as well as resetting. For automatic watches with additional features such as date and world time recalibration is also needed along with rewinding. These complications can be avoided by keeping the watches inside the special device that can keep them charged when not worn.

How it functions?

The automatic watches are self winding. These watches are provided with a moving weight inside them. This moving weight by its swings and rotations performs the winding task inside the watch. This weight set into motion when it is worn by the user. However, when it is not worn the moving weight inside comes to a standstill and as a result the winding mechanism fails to perform. The Watch Winder can hold numbers of watches and keep them in a circular motion so that they can perform the self-winding. Once the mainspring gets wound completely the winding process will be stopped by a specific mechanism and in that way the watch is protected from getting over the wind. Generally, continuous movement for 30 minutes is sufficient to keep the watch in running condition for 24 hours and hence a time-based winder is a better option. This can prevent the excess strain for the winding mechanism.

Different types of winders

Watch Winders are used only by those who have automatic watches and hence the demand for this device is always limited. As a result the manufacturers of watch winders are less in number. They make basically three different types of winders – functional, elegant and extravagant.

The functional type of winders can be kept on a table top or shelf and they have multiple number of rotating watch holders. Each device can wind more than one watch at a time and the watches are held outside the device.

The elegant type winders are designed as enclosed boxes. The boxes are made of wood and are provided with leather covers.

The extravagant type winders belong to the luxury class. These winders have built-in heaters, storage drawers and time displays. The heater maintains the body temperature for the watch. There are high end winders with more numbers of additional options.

Select the device of assured quality

In case the watch winder is not of standard quality, it not only fails to wind the watch but also spoils the watch. The movements as well as the directions of movement of a Watch Winder are normally limited. Movements in excess are harmful to the mechanism of the watch. It is always better to go for a watch box of larger size so that the entire collection of watches can be kept inside the box. The boxes made of leather or other similar fabrics are more durable, light weight and compact so that they can be used during travel also.
