Drip, drip, drip. Trickle, trickle, leak. There are few home concerns that get as bad a reaction as plumbing related ones. After all, nobody likes to have to call in a residential plumber! Why? Because a visit from your local residential plumber usually means an unplanned bill and several hours of frustration and stress. However, failing to call in a plumber when there is even a small problem, will ultimately result in a much larger one.

When you put off calling in the plumber there are a variety of things that can happen. Consider these:

That leaky faucet means that you are paying for water that was wasted. This might not seem like that big of a deal, but a single dripping faucet can leak up to 10,000 gallons of water a year.
If the leak is anywhere outside of the toilet tank, sink or tub then moisture could end up promoting mold and mildew growth, or even rotting the woodwork of your home.
Should the aforementioned mold or mildew occur, then this could lead to you or family members developing respiratory problems.
Ignoring frequent backups, can result in burst pipes. These burst pipes can mean damage to your home, as well as to your yard and landscape.

These problems are real and have happened to many homeowners who opted to ignore the small leaks and drips. But you don't have to deal with plumbing problems. By employing preventative maintenance, your home's plumbing system can work properly for a long time. Here are some tips to help keep your residential plumbing system working at its best.

Never pour grease down a drain. It may be a liquid to begin with, but it will ultimately harden. When this happens, your plumbing is perfect for a backup related problem.
Drain screens are inexpensive. Install them in every sink or bathtub in your home so that they can block any hair or other items that need to be kept out of your home's plumbing.
Once a month, sprinkle about 1/4 cup of baking soda into your sink and tub drains, followed with just enough warm water to get the powder well into the drain. Then pour in 1 cup of white vinegar. Let the clumpy mixture stand a few hours or overnight to dissolve scum and bacteria buildup, then flush the drains with hot water.
Make your faucets last longer by going easy on the handles. It is not necessary to tighten the faucets any more than what is need to prevent the water from dripping.

Those drips and leaks don't have to be a part of your residence's plumbing system. Take the time to be proactive and keep residential plumbing issues off your "must be repaired" list. For any questions regarding residential plumbing talk to your local plumber or call the pros at DeZintop.
