Ermelo the musical .

A trip to Ermelo is like visiting the opera house. The town’s setting is theatrical and the striking detail instantly grabs the attention of its audience

Like many of our towns and cities, Ermelo was founded in the late 1800s. It was named after a Dutch town in the Netherlands, after the owner of the site,ReverendFrans Cachet, linked it to his friend’s hometown. After a horrid time of war, namely the Anglo-Boer War, Ermelo was practically ruined. It took some time for the town to build itself back up to where it was, but today, Ermelo is a gorgeous little example of a triumphant and close-knit community.

Whilst we’re still on the history of the town, it is said that the Leghoya people are the area’s earliest inhabitants. It is predicted that they inhabited the area in the 1400s. Bad preservation methods, wars and natural disasters are said to have contributed to the destruction of their artefacts. As some sort of consolation though, remaining huts and walls are found in the Tafelkop Mountains to prove their existence at one point in our history. San paintings can be found on the Welgelegen farm. Ermelo is also popular for game viewing and other forms of outdoor entertainment.

Ermelo is a very productive town. It is an educational, industrial and commercial centre in the Mpumalanga region. The town’s soil is fertile, hence everything that’s planted happily blossoms. Among some of its main products are maize, potatoes, beans, and sunflower. Wool and cattle are some of the other things that are found in the area. A lot of mining activity also takes place in the town, with anthracite, coal and turbinatebeing some of the minerals available.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that some of the country’s greatest musical minds come out of Ermelo. The late Reggae legend Lucky Dube is a product of this incredible town. His spirit resonates throughout the town and you can hear his music being celebrated in local institutions. Jennifer Ferguson is another talented musician from Ermelo. You can also add songwriter, composer, social activist; ANC Member of Parliament, actress, theatre director, music producer, scriptwriter and life-skills coach to a long list of roles that she’s embraced in her life.

Ermelo guesthouse accommodation serves as the perfect launch pad for one’s adventures in the historic location. All accommodation is generally affordable in Ermelo, and everyone is guaranteed to find a home that will suit their pockets. Ermelo self-catering accommodation ranges from flats, cabins and chalets in town to dormitories in the local game reserves, therefore no-one is ever left wanting.
