Für schrottreife Autos gibt es seit Jahrzehnten ein etabliertes Verfahren zum Recycling und Wiederverwerten: Die Kompaktierung der Autos ist simpel und kostengünstig, das Einschmelzen und die Weiterverwendung durch die Stahlindustrie ebenso. Bei quasi jedem Schrottauto übersteigt dessen Materialwert die Kosten der Verwertung.Doch konventionellen Autos fehlt ein Bauteil, das bei Elektrofahrzeugen essentiell ist: Die Batterie. Diese kann man nicht einfach zerquetschen – wie mit ihr umgegangen werden soll, wenn sie am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer angekommen ist, ist eine der grossen, offenen Fragen der Elektromobilität. Elektroautos sind erst seit ein paar Jahren in grösseren Stückzahlen auf dem Markt vertreten, deshalb ist momentan praktisch jede jemals in einem Elektroauto verbaute Batterie noch in Betrieb.

Wie lang Elektroauto-Batterien in der Praxis wirklich halten, dazu gibt es bisher vor allem anekdotische Daten – die Prüfmenge ist eigentlich nur bei Hersteller Tesla, der mittlerweile insgesamt über 300'000 Elektroautos weltweit auf den Strassen hat, und bei Nissan mit seinem Dauerbrenner «Leaf», aussagekräftig.Während die ersten Tesla Model S mittlerweile bei Laufleistungen von 500'000 bis 800'000 Kilometern angekommen sind, zeigt sich nach dieser Distanz eine Rest-Kapazität von rund 80 Prozent, Fahrer mit «normaleren» Fahrleistungen berichten von 94% Restkapazität nach fünf Jahren.Mit mehr Einbussen in der Reichweite müssen hingegen Fahrer von Nissan-Fahrzeugen wie dem Leaf rechnen: Besonders bei der grösseren 30 kWh-Akkuvariante waren die Batterien oft schon nach zwei Jahren auf dem Niveau von 80% angelangt. Erklären lässt sich dieser Unterschied möglicherweise durch die unterschiedliche Zellchemie, die jeder Hersteller selber bestimmt, sowie durch die Fähigkeiten der Firma, ein effizientes Lade-Management im Akku zu verbauen, mit dem sich die Batteriezellen langfristig schonen lassen.

Die meisten Elektroautohersteller haben inzwischen Verfahren für die Entsorgung beziehungsweise Weiterverwertung von alten Batterien entwickelt. Tesla hat sein Recycling derzeit noch ausgelagert, plant aber dies in Zukunft selbst an seinen «Gigafactories» durchzuführen. Nissan baut alte Batterien einzeln auseinander und ersetzt jedes Zelle, die mehr als 20% ihrer Kapazität verloren hat. So können aus mehreren alten Batterien eine (fast) neuwertige gemacht werden.Dennoch: Es ist noch lange nicht klar, ob das Recycling von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien auch in Isolation wirtschaftlich ist und bleibt, trotz stetig steigender Rohstoffpreise. Daher werden wohl gesetzliche Vorschriften nachhelfen müssen und die Elektroautohersteller zum Recycling zwingen.
