Waterjet, or wasserstrahlschneiden is a process of cutting metals and other materials by a tool that uses water at very high pressure and velocity. This tool is called the Wasserstrahlschneidanlage. Sounds amazing, isn’t it? But actually, water that flows fast enough can really cut metals. This process is similar to water erosion, only more concentrated and accelerated. The machine is used in the manufacture of various machinery parts and fabrication of other devices. When the material to be cut is sensitive to the other method’s high temperature, wasserstrahlschneiden is usually preferred.

A Wasserstrahlschneidanlage is used in many different applications such as aerospace, automotive, tool and die, stone and tile, gaskets, job shop, etc. There is no limit, virtually, to what the machine can cut – stones, plastics, metals, glass, composites, ceramics, rubber, stainless steel, wood and more. To explain the process of wasserstrahlschneiden simply, think of it as the power washer wand of a car wash that has 30 times or more of water pressure. If you notice the everyday power washing at car washes, dirt is being “cut-off” the car’s body, tires and wheels by water.

Cutting metals with water is done by keeping the spray coherent, meaning the water spray should be sticking together. This gives the machine the ability to cut – when the spray is channeled at a very high pressure through a jeweled nozzle that is very narrow, making the spray coherent. A Wasserstrahlschneidanlage do not overheat and never gets dull like metal cutters.

Before wasserstrahlschneiden was invented in the past, people can only cut one piece of metal at a time. They used saws and other processes of mechanical cutting, which now proves to be too time consuming besides expensive. The first waterjets were used in mining in 1852 and has since evolved into being computer-controlled machines. They are used to cut both soft and hard materials

A waterjet is dust-free, odorless, and more importantly, is heat-free. A “sandwich” of different materials with a thickness of 4 inches can be easily cut by the machine. And a thin, a very thin material that measures 5 thousandths of an inch, is also easy to cut by waterjet, with the first cut to be the final cut surface. No additional cutting will be required, which allows you to save on the costs of materials and machining. Most of the time, cutting is done underwater to minimize the noise and water splash.

A Wasserstrahlschneidanlage can take the bark off from a tree even if it is as far away as 40 feet. However, you need to add SuperWater@ to adjust the chemistry of plain water. The SuperWater@ is a polymer chemical that is soluble. It functions by tying together the individual molecules of water to make the jet coherent. The water pressure is set at typically 20,000 and 50,000 pounds per square inch (PSI), and the hole in the jeweled nozzle through which water is forced is from 0.010” to 0.015” in diameter.
