Preserving Gaming History: The Challenge of Inaccessible Classic

A spotlight on the challenge of preserving classic video games from the past due to their inaccessibility and the implications for future game development.

Every generation in the gaming industry's rich history has had an ecosystem that defined it. For many, it's the nostalgic memories of the Playstation 2, the Nintendo Wii, or even the Commodore 64. Launched in 1982, the Commodore 64, an eight-bit computer, left an indelible mark with iconic titles such as Castle Wolfenstein, Ghostbusters, and Buggy Boy. During its 12-year lifespan, studios produced approximately 10,000 titles for this groundbreaking system. However, the question that arises today is, "How feasible is it to play these classic titles in the digital age?"

Unfortunately, the answer is not very feasible, primarily due to the fact that the Commodore 64 and many other systems of its era have become part of an abandoned ecosystem. While the Commodore 64 is hailed as "one of the most influential and historically important platforms of its era," a landmark research study conducted by the Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) in July shed light on a disheartening reality – only 4.5% of Commodore 64 games are in commercial circulation today. The vast majority of the library has become completely inaccessible to gamers and historians alike.

Regrettably, the Commodore 64 is not an isolated case. A mere 13% of video game titles released between 1960 and 2009 are readily available. Accessing nine in ten classic games now necessitates the challenging task of building and maintaining a personal collection, resorting to piracy, or physically traveling to specialized libraries.

This predicament paints a concerning picture for the preservation of video gaming history, which extends beyond nostalgia and entertainment. Preserving video game history is vital for understanding the evolution of culture and technology, and it holds significant implications for future game development.

As we look to the future, it is imperative that we address this issue collectively to ensure that the treasures of gaming's past remain accessible for generations to come. The legacy of these classic games deserves to be celebrated, studied, and cherished. Read more at www.gaminous.com
