The Government of Ontario operates the South Detention Center Toronto. The South Detention Center provides a maximum-security correctional facility for adult male inmates who are serving a sentence of up to 2-years-less-a-day and convict who has been remanded into detention in Toronto prison while awaiting trial. Toronto intermittent Centers built on the site of the former Mimico Correctional Centre, which was closed in 2011 and whose origin dated back to 1887. The South Toronto Detention Centre officially opened on January 29, 2014, which is replacing the Jail Toronto, the Toronto West Detention Centre, and the demolished Mimico Correctional Centre. The Edmonton Remand Centre is the first largest jail in Canada, and The Toronto South Detention Centre is the second-largest jail in Canada.

Facilities

The detention center facility consists of two parts; A maximum-security detention center for more than 1,650 offenders who are on remand and a medium/maximum Toronto correctional facility for men who are sentenced to less than two years, It is also known as the Toronto Intermittent Centre (TIC) that can hold up to 320 inmates serving primarily weekend or other discontinuous sentences.

On May 9, 2008, then the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Toronto announced plans to build a new, more massive correctional center on the site of the Mimico Intermittent Centre, which would replace the Mimico Correctional, the Toronto Jail, and the Toronto West Detention Centre. The existing correctional Centre was closed on December 5, 2011, and the 1st Phase of the new facility, the 320-bed Toronto Intermittent Centre, started accepting prisoners on December 9, 2011. The old correctional center buildings were then demolished to construct a room for the 2nd Phase of the Toronto South Detention Centre, which was finished in November 2012. The Toronto South Detention Centre was officially opened on January 29, 2014.
