Routine use and overuse of laxatives can damage the colon, cause constipation, and promote dependency especially when used long term.

 
It is helpful to remember that daily bowel movements are not necessary to good health. Regularity is defined as a bowel movement, without straining, two to three times per week.To encourage regularity, here are some helpful tips.

- Moving stimulates bowel activity and strengthens colon muscle. Moderate exercise such as stretching or walking is also helpful for maintaining regularity and good health.
- Respond when nature calls. If you are not getting the urge, try going to the toilet 45 minutes after every meal and gently massage your abdomen with your palm in a circular motion.

Doctors tend to prescribe laxatives either to solve a medical symptom or to prepare for a medical exam such as a colonoscopy. However, it does not solve the root cause of the problem.
