DTU is a data terminal device. In a broad sense, when communicating, the module units responsible for sending data information at both ends of the transmission link are called DTU, which is responsible for format conversion and data collation and verification of the transmitted information. In a narrow sense, DTU generally refers to the lower GPRS/CDMA transmission terminal equipment in wireless communication.

DTU is not the same as a Modem.
In terms of software design, DTU encapsulates the protocol stack content and has an embedded operating system. In terms of hardware, it can be seen as the joint of embedded PC and wireless access. GPRS/CDMA Modem is a physical channel to access GPRS/CDMA packet network. It does not have an operating system and must be attached to the computer (similar to cable Modem in function). PPP dial-up connection can only be made on the computer operating system.

In a way, DTU is the combination of embedded PC and GPRS/CDMA Modem, but it can not only be used as Modem alone, but also complete the function of data protocol conversion and transparent transmission. In use, front-end acquisition equipment or intelligent data equipment usually provide standard data interface, such as RS232, rs485/422, etc., these front-end user equipment is suitable for DTU, with the help of GPRS/CDMA network platform, to achieve data communication with the monitoring center end.
