In every mix or song, vocals are an essential element, regardless of genre, except jazz, of course. It is, therefore, vital to ensure that they sound crisp, modern, and professional. There are several techniques you can employ using your Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen.

1. Top-end boost

It is the easiest way to make the vocals sound modern and professional. Most microphones like those from Electro voice or Mooer have an exaggerated top end. You can boost the highs to mimic this trait. You can use the analog modeling EQ with a high shelf and start with a 2dB boost at 10kHz.You can play around with the frequency to find out what works best for you.

2. Control dynamics

Modern sounds require the dynamics of the music to be consistent. All the words and syllables should be at approximately the same level. You can use gain automation for consistency creation before the compressor.

3. Multiband compression

When vocalists move between different registers, the tone in their voices may change. For example, moving closer to the lower record may make the voice sound a bit muddy. You can use multiband compression to control frequencies when they pose a problem.

4. Using delays

For modern sounds, the vocals should come up front, in your face. Using reverb on the vocals achieves the complete opposite and, therefore, undesirable. You should instead use a stereo delay to create space around the vocals, adding some stereo width. Low feedback with slightly different times on either side works best.

5. Adding a subtle plate reverb

It adds more depth and width to your vocals. The key is not to make the reverb noticeable but to bring up the wetness until the reverb comes up and backing it off a bit. You can start with a short delay to give the transients some more definition and a little breathing room.

6. Chorus effect

It is another way to give vocals a bit more depth and shimmer to apply a chorusing effect. You don’t want it to be noticeable; therefore, you can add a stereo chorus, increase the wetness, and then back it off a bit once you notice it.

In conclusion, vocals are crucial; therefore, you require more time mixing them with other instruments, just like Eurico A. Cebolo. It is also essential to invest in high-quality voice enhancement tools like those from LD Systems.
