Rotavirus Group A Market Key Trends and Opportunities

Based on the antigenic protein VP6, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) subdivided the rotavirus into eight groups (A - H).

Rotavirus Group A Market Overview:

Rotavirus is a major cause of severe childhood gastroenteritis. The rotavirus, the largest member of the Reoviridae family, is responsible for nearly two million hospitalizations, around 25 million visits and more than 0.8 million deaths in children under the age of five in the world every year. Rotavirus has a global impact in both developed and developing countries, however, maximum deaths have been observed in developing countries. It is difficult to differentiate gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus from other enteric pathogens. Therefore, identifying the cause of gastroenteritis requires the analysis of fecal samples with commercially available tests. Rotaviruses are double-stranded, non-enveloped RNA viruses, composed of 11 segments. The viral RNA is surrounded by a capsid with three layers: external capsid, internal capsid and central capsid. Based on the antigenic protein VP6, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) subdivided the rotavirus into eight groups (A - H).

The majority of human rotaviruses belong to group A. VP4 and VP7 (protein sensitive protein), two structural proteins of the external capsid, respectively, determine the genotypes P and G of a virus. Changes in the genomic segment can occur between strains due to the segmented structure of viral RNA, resulting in a large number of genotypes P and G. Epidemiological studies have shown that the most common genotypes responsible for diseases in children in the last 20 years were G9P, G3P, G2P and G1P. G12 is a newly emerged genotype. Nucleic acid amplification assays, cell culture and electron microscopy are used for the laboratory diagnosis of rotavirus infections. ELISA, latex agglutination and immune chromatography are the most commonly used methods because they are fast, do not require technical expertise and special tools, very precise, and easy to use.

Drivers and Restraints:

Rotarix and RotaTeq are the two vaccines against rotavirus vaccinated orally against rotavirus gastroenteritis. These vaccines have been used and licensed in several countries since 2006. The Rotarix vaccine provides a high level of protection against rotavirus gastroenteritis caused by types G1, G3, G4 and G9. However, its protection is weak for type G2. The RotaTeq vaccine, used in three doses, offers a high level of protection against types G1, G4 and G9. Rotavirus vaccines are available throughout the world, however, they have not been included in national immunization programs in all countries. The coverage rate of the current rotavirus vaccines for the genotypes detected is quite high. The widespread availability of immunosuppressant drugs advances in molecular diagnostic technologies and increased funding for government organizations and associations are the driving forces of the rotavirus diagnostics market. However, the high cost of vaccines is a major limitation in the global market for the diagnosis of rotavirus.

Segmentation:

The global rotavirus diagnostics market can be segmented based on type of diagnostic test, end-user, and region. In terms of type of diagnostic test, the market can be classified into enzyme immunoassay, ELISA, PCR, RT-PCR, and others. Based on end-user, the global rotavirus diagnostics market can be categorized into hospitals, commercial/private labs, physician offices, and public health labs. The global rotavirus diagnostics market can be segmented into five major regions based on the geography, namely North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa.
