Great CD and DVD Duplication and How it Serves

Understanding the difference between pressing and duplicating a CD is very important when choosing the technique to use for your project. A duplicated CD is not only made in a different way, the end result is also different.

There are 2 ways to play CDs or DVDs. The disc can be burned on a blank CD (it's duplication) or be made from a mold (it's pressing).
2 different techniques:

CD duplication is the same technique that you use at home to burn a CD. The machine writes the information onto blank CDs in large quantities, in duplication rounds. Once burned, the CDs are screen printed in color. Note: some duplicating companies affix a sticker as a screen print. For the CD and DVD Duplication Services in NSW this is essential.

CD pressing is an industrial technique. Your CD master is the basis for creating a mold: the glassmaster (this is a negative of your Audio CD). Plastic is injected into this mold and "pressed". A CD is produced, a true copy of your audio CD, which like any plastic object, will not deteriorate in time, neither in quality nor in form. It is the quality of manufacture of the mold which will affect the functioning or the defects of your CD. Throughout the pressing, machines monitor the various stages of production to ensure that each pressed CD is a true copy of the original audio CD. Once pressed, the CDs receive a thin layer of aluminum which will serve as a protective varnish before color serigraphy (unlike duplication where the CDs are burned but remain very sensitive to shocks and handling).

The CD Master supplied by the customer is the same, whether for duplication or pressing.

Benefits of CD duplication:

Reduced minimum quantities. As CDs are burned individually, you can start duplicating CDs from a single copy.

Faster. Since blank CDs are already in existence, the lead time for making a duplicate CD is much shorter than that for a pressed CD. It takes an average of 2 to 3 days to do so (excluding printing, packaging and transport).

Did you know ?

A duplicate CD cannot be sold in stores. Because you can't sell a burned CD.

Advantages of CD pressing:

The unit cost is much lower than for a duplication.

The result of screen printing is of better quality (choice of offset printing or spot colors).

The CD itself is of better quality, it is "frozen" and guaranteed to be faultless.

A greater choice of packaging is available.

Did you know?

The original mold, the glassmaster, is kept on average for two years in the factory. In case of reprinting it is therefore not useful to redo it (which shortens manufacturing times and reduces pressing costs).
