The state-wide ban by Maharashtra government on plastic products has come into effect from 23rd June. The prohibition extends to a wide variety of plastic items, including plastic carry bags, and even thermocol. The move is aimed at cutting down on pollution caused by discarded plastic items. Drainage lines clogged with plastic and thermocol has often led to a flood like situation every monsoon in various parts of the state, especially Mumbai. Plastic ban will definitely have a positive impact on the environment, however, it also has its own disadvantages.
Thane, the satellite town of Mumbai, with a population of over 2 million, generates about 650 metric tonne of solid waste every day. With the implementation of Plastic Ban, TMC will now have a monumental task in hand in terms of effective plastic waste management. With no or limited access to this civic waste disposal system, thanekars will become habituated to throwing their plastic waste in the small storm water drains as well as the nullahs abound their homes. In an attempt to stop this trend that has resulted in the choking of these sewerages, the Thane Municipal Corporation had proposed a door-to-door waste collection initiative in their 2018-2019 budget. While the vehicles move into every lane in the city daily collecting wet and dry waste, many spots in the city have been left out of owing to various reasons.
