Light on Shadow and Los Angeles-based Monolithic Films announce commemorative concerts, a multimedia art installation, and documentary film exploring an icon of 20th century classical music.

Los Angeles, CA – Artur Schnabel: No Place of Exile is a multimedia art project exploring one of the twentieth century’s iconic musicians and composers. The project includes major landmark concerts (to be held in Berlin and Vienna) with filmed art installations and a feature length documentary, directed by visionary filmmaker Matthew Mishory, that will explore the fascinating life and work of Schnabel and the international effort to bring his music to a wider audience with these series of concerts. No Place of Exile is developed by Light on Shadow and is a project of the Pasadena Arts Council’s EMERGE Fiscal Sponsorship Program, with support from the Akademie der Künste Berlin.

Schnabel, as a classic pianist, had a huge role in championing the performance of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and the then unknown piano works of Schubert. However, looking beyond his masterful classic performances, it turns out that he was fascinating and significant composer of unmistakably modern music. Schnabel's works are intimately linked to his own complex life - a life interrupted by the horrors of two world wars, reforged in exile (after Schnabel, a Jew, was forced from Germany), and complicated by questions of identity and belonging.

In 2016, the spirit of Schnabel and his remarkable compositions return to Berlin in a major commemorative concert by pianist Markus Pawlik and his musical collaborators, singer Dietrich Henschel and the Szymanowski String Quartet.

Light On Shadow and producer Alvaro Fernández of Monolithic Films have launched a crowdfunding campaign on the indiegogo platform to kickstart this ambitious multimedia project. They plan to fundraise $30,000 to set in motion the first comprehensive multimedia exploration of one of the twentieth century’s greatest musicians.
