‘Accidental’ Cancers Are Rare, Study Finds

Irving, TX, April 18, 2016 – A study that concluded most cancers were “accidental” left many wondering if their efforts to prevent this disease were all for nothing. After all, if it just comes down to luck of the draw, why bother eating right, exercising and making smart lifestyle choices? Other researchers, however, have challenged those results. They have found that while some accidental cancers most certainly do exist, the vast majority of cases are directly attributable to lifestyle choices, environment and other controllable factors.

“While some cases of cancer can be chalked up to bad luck and random mutations the reality is preventative measures can and do make a difference for many,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “When people take meaningful measures to prevent cancer, they can dramatically lower their risks, researchers have repeatedly found.”

Another study backing up the importance of preventative measures was recently released. In that study, researchers found that most cancers are caused by external factors, such as environment, diet, smoking habits and obesity.

“While not every case of cancer can be prevented, the truth is people can do their parts to keep this disease at bay,” says Dr. Echt. “Eating right, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding environmental toxins and refraining from smoking can all go a very long way. There are no guarantees though, which is why early screening and routine health exams remain so very important.”

People who are at risk for cancer due to known genetic factors or family history are urged to speak with their healthcare providers about risks and screening. Since cancer can technically strike anyone, it is also recommended that everyone speak with their doctors about prevention, personal risks and appropriate screening. Most forms of cancer, when caught early, are often highly treatable.
