[MELBOURNE, 28/12/2017] - Evidence from several studies suggests that occupational exposure to harmful substances caused various forms of cancer in workers from various industries.

Exposure to Asbestos

One study published in The Annals of Occupational Hygiene focused on the job-exposure matrix to estimate the effects of asbestos exposure. The study, through the help of three local hygienists, found that workers in asbestos manufacturing, shipyard, and insulation industries had the highest average exposures.

Over 90% of the exposed occupations were exposed to asbestos variants like crocidolite, which can cause serious and irreversible lung damage.

Lead and Other Carcinogens

A separate study published in The Annals of Occupational Hygiene looked at the prevalence of work-related exposure to 38 known or suspected carcinogens including lead. The study, which covered Australian workers aged 18 to 65 years old, found that the main forms of exposure were soldering, sanding and paint jobs.

Lead was found to be a culprit in different occupational circumstances not only in Australia but other developed countries as well, the study added.
