Touching People Shaping the Future Inspiring life stories from beneficiaries and RAFInians

Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) publishes its accomplishment report for the first half of 2021 for all its focus areas, including Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC).
EJACC continuously coordinates with local government units (LGUs) in promoting its cancer advocacy. The primary activities include capacity building at the rural health units, strengthening the ability of these units to carry out cancer screening.
The institution recognizes these LGUs and health units’ role in driving cancer awareness at the grassroots level. In line with this, EJACC assisted 14 LGUs in drafting and releasing their cancer ordinances.
With the help of these units also, the locals are provided access to cancer screening and procedures. From January to July 2021, EJACC was able to screen 4,585 beneficiaries and provide extensive assistance to 33 cancer patients. It worked closely with 20 LGUs and 22 private clinics.
Screening, diagnostic, and treatment assistance are also ongoing. Certain qualifications apply. For individuals wishing to avail of cancer screening and diagnosis, the requirements include laboratory request, certificate of indigency or barangay certification, and 2x2 picture.
The patient must be indigent, a permanent resident of Cebu, and between 18 and 65 years old. Furthermore, the patient should be diagnosed with an early cancer stage (Stages 0 to 2). Required screening could be either a core needle or excision biopsy. The patient may qualify for either chemotherapy assistance, surgery assistance, radiation treatment, or brachytherapy treatment.
For cancer patients seeking treatment assistance, the requirements include medical abstract with pathologic report, certificate of indigency or barangay certification, personal profile, letter of request, BIR certificate or certificate of no income, and social case study report issued by the Local Social Welfare Office.
EJACC strongly recommends increasing cancer awareness, which, in turn, drives early detection and diagnosis and, thus, a more successful treatment. This advocacy shall continue onwards the second half of 2021 and beyond.
