The Founder and Medical Director at the Prostate Seed Institute discusses prostate cancer treatment options.

Irving, Texas, -Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. Taking early steps to diagnose and treat prostate cancer can help cure this desease. The team of medical professionals at the Prostate Seed Institute works closely with patients and their loved ones to establish the best treatment method available.

“When deciding on the suitable treatment option for a patient, many factors come into play,” says the Founder and Medical Director at Prostate Seed Institute. “The factors include patient’s diagnosis, age, overall health, and each treatment’s potential side effects.”

The commonly used treatment options include:

• Prostate seed implantation – During the procedure, the doctor places small radioactive seeds in the cancerous prostate gland. Over time, the seeds’ material starts to disintegrate while releasing a low dose of radiation. Once the seed completely disintegrates, no radioactive material remains in the prostate. The procedure takes approximately an hour and doesn’t harm nearby healthy tissues.

• High Dose Radiation-The therapy entails temporary placement of radioactive seeds in the prostate. The seeds have more radioactive material than those used in the conventional prostate seed implants. Initially, the patient gets seed treatment 2 to 3 times. After this, the treatment is repeated in two weeks.

• External beam radiation – During this therapy, a patient visits a radiation facility once a day, from Monday to Friday. This may continue for about 7 to 8 weeks. The treatment is painless and targets the prostate gland.

• Seed implantation and external beam radiation combined – Patients at an advanced stage of prostate cancer risk having the disease spread beyond the prostate. In such cases, a combination of seed implants and external beam therapy may be applicable.

• Hormonal therapy – If the cancerous tumor is large, hormonal therapy may be used. This treatment can suppress, add, or eliminate certain hormones to stop or slow down the spread or growth of cancer.

“Radiation therapy is a common treatment for prostate cancer”, says the Founder and Medical Director. “It’s preferred because of its safety and effectiveness.”
