Group III vs. PAO Performance

The widespread need of base oil makes it essential to understand the properties and formation of base oil and its categories.

There are different categories of Base oil and this is generally divided into five broad categories. When it is rightly refined and right processed it can be further used in various segments. There are many Base oil traders in Kuwait that ensures providing just the required base oil availability in all categories to meet the need of different segments all around the world.

Often there are five categories of base oil which may include Base oil I, II, III, IV, V etc. There are easy ways with which you can broadly classify the group III base and PAO performance where PAO means the IV group of Base oil.

Among all the classifications of base oil often Group III and the Group IV base oil are compared in terms of performance and their applications in modern days. It is easy to understand that both have their own properties and this is the reason why they are broadly used in different segments.

Polyalphaolefins (PAOs) or the type IV base oil are said to have superior performance characteristics when compared to other existing base oil types. They have superior viscosity index (VI), better pour point, and volatility and oxidation stability. It has characteristics that could not be achieved with conventional mineral oils. It is nice that properties of base oil IV like viscosity, pour point, volatility and oxidation stability can all be independently controlled if required.

Even though many believe that group IV is better than Group three but the modern Group III oil can actually outperform a PAO in several areas. It is quite important as lubricants and is often used for additive solubility, lubricity and anti-wear performance. Group III base oils are now manufactured with fine refined process and thus it can now rival PAO stocks in terms of properties which may include pour point, viscosity index and oxidation stability performance.

There are different base oil suppliers around the world which provides both Group III and group IV base oil as per the requirement and both of them are best.

Some of the key measures for defining the performance of Group III and Group IV base oil include:
• Pour Point
• Cold Crank
• NOACK Volatility
• Oxidation Stability
