BROWNSVILLE, Texas (September 1, 2020) – The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport and the City of Brownsville have received notification from the U.S. Department of Transportation of a grant award of $8.5 million in federal funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.

On Friday August 28, U.S. Congressman Filemon Vela announced $5 million of discretionary funds were also awarded to the City and airport for the next phase in construction of the airport.

“I am proud to support the City of Brownsville’s efforts to secure funding for improvements to the
Brownsville South Padre International Airport,” said Congressman Vela. “This project has been several years in the making, and the funding from FAA will bring the city one step closer to completing construction of the new terminal. Completion of this project will have a significant positive economic impact for South Texas, and I look forward to seeing the finished result very soon.”

In an email to airport staff and city leadership, Assistant City Manager and Aviation Administrator Bryant Walker said, “BRO is thrilled to announce a grant award for FY 2020 totaling $ 8.5 million from the FAA, which represent the final and total funding needed to complete all phases of the new terminal and aircraft parking area.”

"The $5 million discretionary along with an $850,000 grant-matching Cares fund, championed by Congressman Vela, plus the programmed $2.65 million AIP entitlement funds come at a critical time. It will provide relief for flagging revenues due to the pandemic," he said.

Bryant Walker also thanked Congressman Vela and his Staff for years of efforts to bring the project to fruition, working closely with the FAA to properly manage and phase the infrastructure project. “This is the culmination of more than a decade of efforts that translate in more than $ 40 million in total grant funding and a local investment of $30 million,” said Walker. “This project will meet the travel needs of residents and visitors and drive economic development for decades to come."
