Due to continued unplanned growth of Delhi city, there has been always a gap between the requirements and provisions of essential services. In the absence of piped water supply infrastructure particularly in unplanned and unauthorized areas, the requirement of water tankers has been on the rise. It provided private tanker operators to exploit the situation and the poor residents felt helpless. In the peak summer season the demand for the water tanker supply in the city multiplied manifolds and the gap between the demand and availability of water tanker service often led to local fights and agitations.

With great determination officers of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) under the leadership of Mr. B M Dhaul (Member) water, DJB crossed many hurdles to engage GPS fitted and stainless steel containers mounted water tankers. With constant pursuance, 414 new water tankers with GPS were engaged. An efficient mechanism was also developed with the help of Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS), to monitor the movement of these water tankers so that the residents are benefitted and the customer satisfaction level was enhanced.
Close monitoring resulted in optimum utilization of the water tanker service which was provided free of cost in water deficient areas across Delhi. It reduced dependence on the private water tankers where the quality of water carried was always questionable. The water supplied through GPS fitted-stainless steel mounted containers tankers was free of impurities and meeting the drinking water standards.
