Acoustic and Thermal Insulation Market for Electric Vehicles To See Massive Growth By 2031

Posted October 20, 2021 by bisrsrch

The growth in the global acoustic and thermal insulation market for electric vehicles is attributable to the ongoing demand for innovative, lightweight, and efficient insulation materials for electric vehicles

The materials used for acoustic and thermal insulation for electric vehicles are identified as foams, fibers, and pads, among others. Regular research and development in the insulation technology has led to the utilization of different types of materials for electric vehicle insulation. These materials, owing to their distinguished characteristics, are used for various applications in different parts of an electric vehicle. Foams are made from different materials such polyurethane, polypropylene, and polyethylene. Fibers can be classified as both synthetic and natural fibers. Pads and mats are generally made from nitrile rubber (NBR) and butyl components. Other materials which can also be utilized for insulation in electric vehicles are tapes, aerogel, and sprays, among others.

The demand for electric vehicle insulation materials varies according to various geographical regions. The electric vehicle insulation materials market holds a prominent share in various countries of North America, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and Europe. Government regulations, technological advancements, extensive investments for dedicated R&D facilities, and presence of areas with high sunlight are some of the major drivers that are propelling the growth of the market in the region.

The supply chain of acoustic and thermal insulation for electric vehicles consists of different stages, as illustrated in the preceding figure. Generally, insulation material suppliers acquire their chemical raw materials from raw material suppliers. Then, they supply their insulation material in bulk to tier 1 suppliers for further application in vehicle parts. These components are then sold to the automotive OEMs for factory assembly fitting in their vehicle models. It is possible for automotive insulation material manufacturers to supply their products to both the automotive OEMs and tier 1 suppliers such as door, seat, floor, and electric motor, among others.

There are several components inside a passenger compartment of an electric vehicle that need to be insulated, both acoustically and thermally. Some of the prominent areas where insulation would be needed are mentioned in the succeeding figure. Firstly, unlike an internal combustion engine vehicle, there is a lack of high levels of waste heat to be used in passenger cabins in EVs. Moreover, in BEVs, functions such as air-conditioning, refrigerant compressor, and cabin heating, which are needed in the passenger compartment, are powered by the vehicle’s battery, which can put a strain on the battery’s functioning and the vehicle’s driving range. Additionally, an immense amount of noise and vibration may become audible inside the passenger cabin due to the imperative outside noises such as tire noise, road noise, and traffic noise.

Increase in the volume of passenger compartment area is mainly due to the heightened need for better sound insulation in an electric vehicle. Various noises from within the car and from the outside environment become more prominent due to the absence of internal combustion engine and transmission system, which earlier used to mask these ancillary noises. To maintain a positive public stance toward electric vehicles, vehicle OEMs are striving to make the driving experience of EVs more enjoyable and satisfying, which has driven them toward adding better insulation inside the passenger cabin in various places such as doors, dashboard, floor, and roof, to eliminate any internal or outside noises and improve the NVH systems of the vehicle.
