Bisola Akinyemi first began working in Human Resources as a simple way to make a living wage. Over time however, he began to develop a passion and interest in the field that has made him quite successful. Mr. Akinyemi has become so immersed in HR that he one day hopes to own his own third-party HR staffing business.

Human Resources is a unique field, one that requires a specific set of skills and personal traits. If one does possess these traits, as well as the passion to fuel them, HR can be a steady, reliable, and rewardable career. It is estimated that there are 500,000 HR practitioners in the United States alone, and many millions more across the world, meaning that there is still a strong demand for the field, one that is likely only to grow.

When it comes to ranking, a Chief HR Officer (also known as an HR Director), is the highest level executive HR position that most companies offer. A Chief HR Officer usually has the unique duty of reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer about his or her findings.

Professionals like Bisola Akinyemi in Human Resources find that careers in the field generally fall into two different categories, a generalist, and a specialist. A generalist typically is tasked with handling employee grievances, questions, and concerns directly. A generalist also has a large work load that falls in a wide range of different projects, and sometimes, even different organizations. The generalist’s responsibilities can change drastically depending on what is needed by the company.

Conversely, a specialist in HR have a well-defined and specific function within a business or organization. The specialist usually handles specific sensitive situations that are more complex, meaning they require more training and experience. An example of a specialist HR employee would be one that deals with work place sexual harassment. Sexual harassment in the workplace is a delicate and sensitive, yet very serious subject. That is why it often merits the need of an experienced specialist to deal with. Whether a specialist or generalist however, an HR representative tries to keep a balance of satisfaction between employer and employee.
