Battelle Memorial Institute : Battelle CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System Deployed to Long Island to Meet Urgent Need for Personal Protective Equipment for New York Healthcare Workforce

March 31, 2020 —Battelle announced today that it has deployed a system to decontaminate N95 respirator masks to State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island to meet the critical need of protecting healthcare workers on the frontline. It is in the final stages of assembly, will begin testing procedures and expected to start decontaminating up to 80,000 masks per day by the end of the week.

The CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System™ (CCDS™) uses concentrated, vapor phase hydrogen peroxide (VPHP) and works by exposing used respirator masks to the validated concentration level for 2.5 hours to decontaminate biological contaminates, including SARS-CoV-2.Battelle has a fully operational system at its West Jefferson, Ohio facility that has processed test batches of previously worn PPE received from Central Ohio hospitals.



Negotiations are underway to place a second system at undisclosed location in the New York metropolitan area to address that city’s critical shortage of PPE needed by healthcare workers and first responders.

Battelle and Stony Brook University have a long-standing relationship; outside of their individual missions, together the two organizations comprise Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (BSA) which since 1998, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage and operate Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The University offered the site as it seeks to meet the region’s growing need for essential PPE to address the growing number of confirmed cases of COVID-19.

“The Battelle team has been working around the clock for several weeks to build, test and get approval for this system so that we can mobilize to the areas of the country that need it the most, and clearly New York City is at the top of that list,” said Matt Vaughan, Battelle’s Contract Research President.
