Is Platelet Rich Plasma Facial Injection Treatment Safe During Pregnancy?

PRP facial injection is an advanced medical treatment that involves drawing blood from a patient and putting it in a centrifuge machine for extraction of platelet-rich plasma.

The platelet-rich plasma is then injected back into the patient’s body to enhance healing and tissue growth. This treatment method has been there for a while now and is mostly used by doctors to treat athletes who have suffered sports injuries.

Recently, Dr. John Kahen from Beverly Hills Hair Restoration introduced PRP treatment for hair loss. The treatment works the same way as treating damaged tissue, where blood drawn from the patient is put into a centrifuge and spun rapidly. This is meant to separate three blood compounds – the red blood cells, platelet-rich plasma, and platelet-poor plasma. The aim is to extract platelet-rich plasma and inject it back to the patient scalp to promote hair growth in dormant hair follicles.

Platelet-rich plasma injection is also used in PRP facial injection to promote healing and reduce wrinkles. Like any invasive medical procedure, PRP treatment comes with several risks. The most pertinent risk is infection. Using this therapy on pregnant women exposes them to the sepsis infection, which can be fatal to the pregnant mother’s health.

Since there is a high risk of infection involved in platelet-rich plasma facial injection, many practitioners prefer not to use it on pregnant women. Whether the pregnant woman is trying to treat hair loss or face, PRP facial injections are not recommended for a woman in that healthy state.

Taking the risk on pregnant women is not worth it at all. Although PRP treatment for hair loss has proved to work, a pregnant woman is not eligible for this kind of treatment. PRP treatment for hair loss works best when combined with other forms of treatments such as the follicular unit extraction hair transplant procedure and medication. It is normally used as an adjunct therapy in treating hair loss to promote hair growth. On its own, PRP for hair loss has minimal effect.

At Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, if a patient wants to start a family by having children, she is guided on which treatment will work best in her condition. The team of professional surgeons headed by Dr. John Kahen are dedicated to ensuring that the health of the pregnant patient is not at risk when seeking hair restoration treatments.

Both male and female patients are given pre and postnatal instructions that safeguard their health during hair loss treatment. If a patient wants to have a child, the doctors will have to postpone any form of hair loss treatment at conception. The treatment commences when the mother stops breastfeeding, which is after six months. Dr. Kahen advises pregnant women not to take Hair Vitalics for Women hair growth supplements while pregnant or even when nursing. She should consult her doctor first if she wants to use this food supplement.

The patient’s husband, who is undergoing hair restoration treatments for male pattern baldness, can continue using minoxidil throughout the pregnancy. However, if the husband is using finasteride 1mg, he should refrain from taking it for seven days before conception. He is free to also use Hair Vitalics for Men hair growth supplements in the pregnancy.

A woman may experience intense hair thinning after delivering her baby. This is regardless of whether she had hair or a hair loss condition or not. This condition is known as postpartum alopecia. It will come a few months after the mother delivers the baby, and it will affect the entire scalp. Mothers who are nursing and had preexisting hair loss conditions need to adjust their pre-pregnancy treatment routine. This is to help them deal with both problems simultaneously.

The patient needs to first know the normal hair growth cycle in order to order to understand hair loss. The hair growth cycle consists of three phases. These three phases include: the active growth phase that goes on for several years, the resting phase, which happens for three months, and the shedding phase. Certain hormonal changes can occur in a pregnant woman that increase the growth phase period.

This may lead to a full hair growth before giving birth.
Once the mother delivers her baby, the cycle will gradually regulate itself in a few months' time. During this period, the mother will experience the shedding of hoarded hair in the entire scalp. If a mother is not well informed about this condition, she may go into a panic frenzy. However, she should be told that this is quite normal.
Before the baby’s first birthday, the growth of natural hair would have started going back to normal. If this doesn’t happen and the mother is concerned about her hair loss condition, she can seek postpartum hair loss treatment.
