Caring for dementia patients can be difficult since different stages of the disease require different levels of care. Senior Helpers created the Senior Gems® program to help caregivers and relatives assess and provide the proper care.

[TOWSON, 3/26/2018] — Senior Helpers created Senior Gems® to assist caregivers in assessing seniors with dementia and provide the care that they need.

Dementia is a neurocognitive disorder that affects the elderly. It is an umbrella term for cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. Different stages of dementia can affect different abilities. In the earlier stages, a person will usually manifest forgetfulness. During the last stages, a person loses motor control and forgets how to perform basic actions.

Millions of Americans suffer from dementia, and leading organizations such as the Mayo Clinic and Alzheimer’s Association estimate that 1 in 3 seniors live and pass away with the condition.

Families caring for loved ones with dementia encounter the difficulty of providing proper care for their elderly relatives. Since conditions vary from one stage to the other, proper care changes as well. Patients in the advanced stages might not be able to express themselves well, if at all. As such, it can be frustrating for their relatives and caregivers since dementia care becomes mostly guesswork.

The Senior Gems® system classifies seniors using gems as a metaphor for each stage of dementia. This classification system allows for tailored care for each stage of dementia. There are six different gems in the program namely sapphire, diamond, emerald, amber, ruby, and pearl.

Senior Gems® focuses on what is precious and unique about each senior. Although they understand that needs and care will change as dementia progresses, the program is meant to enable seniors to make the most out of their present condition. According to Senior Helpers, families with relatives displaying signs of dementia can benefit from the concepts and tips Senior Gems® provides. Relatives of dementia patients living in Northern Kentucky can visit the Florence, Kentucky branch to learn about dementia care through the Senior Gems® program.
