SGS publishes a Consumer Compact article looking at the global problem of e-waste and France’s new reparability index.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an article looking the growing global problem of e-waste and France’s new reparability index for certain electrical and electronic (EE) consumer products.

It is estimated that globally, each person annually produces 7.3 kg of e-waste. This situation is unsustainable and so countries are adopting strategies to stop obsolescence and reduce the EE industry’s impact on the environment.

In February 2020, France passed the Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy Act (AGEC) law. This covers five categories of EE product – computers, TVs, smartphones, lawnmowers (wired, battery-operated and robotic) and washing machines. Since January 1, 2021, French vendors have been required to display a reparability score to help consumers choose products that are easier to repair.

SGS’s Consumer Compact article looks at the global problem of e-waste, some of the strategies being enforced to reduce waste, the requirements in the AGEC, and what manufacturers can do to improve the reparability score of their products.
